Can viruses damage my computer? The quick answer to that is NO! The reason I want to clarify this is because I’ve noticed some disturbing messages on Twitter – enough to make me want to say something about it. Apparently some people think that if their Windows computer or laptop gets a virus, trojan, spyware etc., that the computer is no longer usable. They then (presumably) toss the infected hardware into the trash and go buy another! THIS IS ALMOST CERTAINLY NOT THE CASE!!! Your computer is a combination of software and hardware. The software sends commands to the hardware and the hardware responds to those commands. Remove the software, and the computer is just a box of circuitry with nothing to do. In the case of a virus or other malware infection, the installed software (your operating system, programs, and data) might very well be in peril and possibly corrupt beyond recovery – but your computer hardware is PERFECTLY FINE! All it needs is to have the infection removed, and/or have the corrupt programs/data/operating system removed and re-installed. But if you don’t believe me… please email me the next time you want to toss out your laptop. I will be more than happy to take it from you, remove the virus or just erase everything, and re-install an operating system on it. I assure you – it will make become a fine computer once again.
