Tips on Using Malwarebytes “Anti-Malware” Program
Dec 25th
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
The Malwarebytes program known as “Anti-Malware” or “MBAM” for short, does a wonderful job of removing malware. It comes in a free, and “Pro” version. The “Pro” version offers real-time protection – actively working in the background examining files as you open them and checking them for any known malware, and it offers an IP Blocking feature called “IP Protection”, which can prevent you from accessing a known malicious website. The free version offers neither IP Blocking nor real-time protection. It’s not a total solution to malware, but no single product is. It is a tool and should be a part of everyone’s malware toolbox. As good as it is, you will need to dig around to find out how to use it effectively. The built in help is very skimpy. You can visit Malwarebytes.org and search the message forums for more help.

The Great Disappearing Act
Dec 18th
Science has identified about 2 million species of living things on the earth. Estimates are that there may be anywhere from 5 to 100 million total. If we continue on our current path, 1 million species will disappear… in the next 40 years! Other things you can eventually kiss goodbye… Wine, New Orleans (among other coastal cities), Pacific Salmon, Glaciers, Coral Reefs, and yes, Polar Bears.

Copenhagen Agreement Unlikely
Dec 17th
While the next 24 hours are the most crucial, the over-all feeling at Copenhagen is that no agreement will be reached, not even an interim political agreement. Poor countries say the rich countries are to blame for destroying the planet and are not doing enough. They seek much more funding from rich nations, and rich nations, particularly the US, appear intent on limiting their contribution to as little as possible. The US has announced it is in agreement with being part of a 100 billion dollar fund to help poorer nations adapt to Climate Change. However the US (typically) did not say to what extent they would contribute, while at the same time attaching conditions to their involvement, namely that a firm agreement be reached this week (again, unlikely) and that China provide greater transparency surrounding their efforts. And so it goes…

Tiger in the Rough
Dontcha’ just love what some people can do with Photoshop? Kinda reminds me of American Gothic, with a twist! Ya gotta love somebody who will bust out a window to save your life, even after you’ve treated them like an afterthought. Elin Nordegren deserves better. I hear she just bought a house December 1st – in Sweden – and is expected to file for divorce after Christmas.
NOD32 – My Favorite AntiVirus Program
Dec 12th
Our current recommendation for Antivirus protection is a product called NOD32 Antivirus, from a company called ESET. NOD32 doesn’t have a catchy name but it is just about everything one could want in an Antivirus program. It’s light and fast, so it doesn’t slow down your computer and doesn’t need as much memory as many of its competitors. It offers real-time protection, More >

Microsoft’s Gift to Tech Support
Ever try to describe to a tech support person over the phone how your computers error message occurred? It’s very often an exercise in frustration. “Why can’t they understand what I’m thinking?” Tech Support has always been in desperate need of magical ESP powers. Since science hasn’t come up with anything of the sort – the film “Men who stare at goats” not withstanding – the next best thing would be a picture, or more precisely, a screen-shot or two, or three, with instructions regarding which key was pressed or which icon was clicked. Well good news! If you have Windows 7, you can do just that. More >
